32) The Tunnels under the Juderia, Seville

Moisés elaborates on the map of the tunnels that run under the Hotel Las Casas de la Juderia.

The tunnels are now decorated by the Hotel

Hotel of the Houses of the Jewish Quarter

The myth of the boy who was martyred by the Jews led to the pogroms that started in June 1391.  The locals still tell the story as though it's true and offer fresh flowers to the mythical boy's shrine in the Saint Nicolas Church. We go in to view the shrine to the 'matyr'.

120 Jews in Seville now.
20-25,000 Jews in Spain now.
Approx 200-300,000 Jews in Spain before the Inquisition.

Possibly the house of Shmuel Ha-Levi, dated to 14th century. Always called the Levies area and adjacent was the Levie shule. In 1483 it ceased being a synagogue and was turned into a church.
Below, the church, debatedly the Levie synagogue. Excavations (not a high priority by the church) would reveal the truth or not of its previous identity.

23 synagogues reportedly existed in Seville.

From Genesis: He will step on your head
God's punishment for transgression in the Garden of Eden - this Hebrew sign placed here by Christians. (An anti-Semitic gesture.)

Remnant of 13th - 15th century Jewish cemetery of 182 graves, remains encased in a car park.
The cemetery was discovered in 1997 before this area was turned into a car park.

This is the wall between the Jewish Quarter and the rest of the Old City of Seville.

We get tickets for the Flamenco Tradicional guitar concert tonight on Moisés' recommendation.
