I'm paying attention to works about the body because that's the topic for next semester.

A lot of works show engagement with issues of space.

In the new Theatre of war, not seen in ArtBasel before, this is a recreation to Osama bin Laden's final compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. You can buy it for €375,000

Powerful works relating to war, conflict and terrorism are making an impact in ArtBasel this year. Previously not considered market-friendly, works inspired by sensitive political subjects were usually the domain of non-selling biennials and the Kassel-based Documenta exhibition.

Lisa Essers, the director of the CapeTown and Johanesburg- based Goodman Gallery, says:  "The social pendulum has swung back towards the ethos of the 1960s. We are seeing a reaction against the big, shiny, flashy tendencies of the past decade; people are making more meaningful work."

Artists from conflict zones such as the Middle East and Asia are becoming more visible. Artist, Kader Attia, stresses that upheavals in the Arab world and beyond mean that the "bling-bling era couldn't last any longer. Art practice is linked to war. The relationship between war and avant-garde is extremely tight."

Collectors may not want to be confronted daily by such issue-based art; most collectors are still attracted to object-based art. While hard-hitting works may be destined for institutions or museum collections, there's a rise in private collectors buying works with a social conscience.

              Fondation Beyeler

   Evi, from the Shalom tour, and I meet at the Fondation Beyeler. Beyeler is an aristocrat who gave his valuable art collection to the state.




Evi bounces the helium cushions in the Andy Warhol section.

Evi's a very fit major walker who walks with family/ friends from say Basel to Lucerne. They stop at accommodation to eat and rest after 6-8 hours of walking daily on typically undulating Swiss terrain.
