5. Estonia

                  TALLIN

Estonia - notes taken from guide's talk.

6 or 7 thousand Jews before  ww2 in Estonia. Lutherans mostly. 19th century orthodox churches.
60 wild  bears in Estonia.
Stony ground because there was once a glacier.
Livonia no Jews, out of  Pale of Settlement.
Estonia identifies more with Finland than with the Baltics.
Good economy, 1500 islands, Sarima meterotic crater, pristine nature, ferries between the islands. Highest hill in Baltic states 350 metres - they call them mountains.
Estonia had Swedish population.
Small no of Jews in Parnu, persecuted by Nazis, some returned.
Wooden houses with gables. Shalom on signs here, maybe Israelis. Kabbalistic / students in Estonia.
